What it is, what it is made of and how it stops a projectile.
Vehicle armoring is the set of materials and processes added to a vehicle so the cabin can resist gunfire and other attacks. It is not just "adding plates": it is a design that protects people while the vehicle still looks and drives like a normal one.
A projectile arrives with a lot of energy on a very small area. Armor works by absorbing and spreading that energy: ballistic steel deforms and slows it, laminated glass dissipates it layer by layer and high-strength textiles catch the fragments. That is why different materials are combined instead of using just one.
Full armoring protects the whole cabin: doors, sides, roof, floor, glass and, depending on the case, the rear area and the engine. Each area uses the material that works best there. See each component in ballistic steel, bulletproof glass, hybrid armor and run-flat tires.
Protection is only as good as its weakest point. The overlaps between doors and pillars, the hinges and the glass joints are designed so there are no gaps a projectile could pass through. This is where a workshop's experience makes the difference.
Armor is classified by the type of weapon it resists. A higher level protects against more powerful weapons, but it also weighs and costs more. See the armor levels or the guide on choosing the right level.
An armored vehicle weighs more, so suspension and brakes are reinforced and suitable tires are used. It is driven more carefully and checked more often. We explain it in weight, suspension and brakes and in maintenance.
An armored vehicle greatly reduces risk, but it does not make anyone invulnerable. Its purpose is to give you time and room to leave the danger zone.
